Blushing On

We have been there

That era of plenty

Not concretized in structures

Though remembered for its features

When contrast was clear

As night is from day

Between our individual lack

And the collective promise

But we smiled, in hope

Of an impending transfer

From fanciful statistics

To elevated financial statuses

So we blushed

Believing we had cause to.

Today, the years have passed

And the tears have flowed

But more windfalls have followed

And our lack surpassed

By harder biting realities

Of wanton judicial rot

And suffocating glut of filth

Of infrastructural decays

And monument-al neglect

The floods have come

Washing us to the shore

Where we await the ship of progress

So we paddle no more in despair

But blush, in fragmented hope.
